As he steps down from inter-county football with 5 All Irelands, 9 Munster titles, 4 National Football Leagues, 8 All Stars and the oddest nickname in the game.

Colm Cooperhas been terrorising defences for 15 years with his skill in front of goal with both feet, and his name is often the last word in many games.

But not his birth name handed down by his parents to the young red headed baby, but rather his unusual (and some might say unfortunate) nickname, ‘Gooch’.

A common surname in the US, a valve for steam locomotives and the slang for a part of the anatomy are better known uses for ‘Gooch’ outsideof the Emerald Isle.

But in the heart of the Kingdom and in all GAA homes around the country Gooch is associated withone of the best forward to plays in Croke Park.

And where did the name come from? According to former Kerry footballer Peter O’Brien, he claimsthat he is the man responsible for christening the Dr Crokes man ‘Gooch’.

‘There was a doll out in the ’80s called the Goochie doll,”O’Brien said in 2012, ‘the doll had pink hair and one day it struck me that it looked like Colm so I said it to him and then everyone started calling him Gooch. I had no idea that it would catch on like it did.’

Stick, it certainly did because it was the early 90’s when Cooper picked up the nickname kicking balls out to the senior players at Dr Crokes and it has remained ever since.

And while some minds of a dirty nature may have thought of the body part which has been given the slang name, it turns out the red headed scoring machine simply reminded his team mate of a 1980’s doll.

With no record of the dolls online other then the reference to the man himself maybe O’Brien was hiding the real reason behind the name – who knows?
