Few things make me as happy as creating a new recipe and immediately realizing it’s become a favorite recipe of my family. And that’s exactly what happened the first time I made this fruit cobbler. When both my boys equally agree something is delicious, you know you’ve got a winner on your hands.

By now, you’ve probably seen other recipes for cake mix cobbler on Reels, TikTok, etc. Most of them require you to put the fruit on the bottom of the dish, sprinkle dry cake mix over the top of the fruit, and then layer the top with slices of butter.

I haven’t tried their method. Maybe it works. But it appears to me that the topping is a little more “crisp” like than a traditional cobbler topping.

I learned this method of layering a cobbler with the batter on bottom from my grandmother when I was little. And it’s never failed me.

Her cobbler crust used self-rising flour, sugar, and buttermilk. And she always used canned peaches. The syrup is the magic ingredient to make a juicy filling. I’ve chosen to simplify the ingredient list even more by opting to use a boxed cake mix for the batter. It is insanely easy, supremely delicious, and definitely a recipe you need to make ASAP.

Frequently Asked Questions about making a 3 Ingredient Cobbler:

Can I make this recipe with fresh peaches?

During the time of year when fresh peaches are abundant, making an easy peach cobbler with fresh peaches sounds like a great idea. But this is not the best recipe to use them in. Because this is a 3-Ingredient Peach Cobbler recipe, it’s important to use canned peaches, which have the syrup needed to keep the cobbler from being too dry.

You could potentially make your own fresh peach filling by cooking fresh peaches with a bit of water and sugar. The fruit juices from the fresh fruit, with the water and sugar will create a syrup. But then it’s no longer the same quick and easy recipe.

If you prefer a fresh peach cobbler, here’s a delicious recipe to try. It has a biscuit dough crust and uses fairly simple ingredients.

Can I make this recipe with a box of yellow cake mix?

I haven’t tested it that way, but functionally, it should work. It will be a little more on the “vanilla” flavored side of things, whereas this recipe has a pronounced cinnamon flavor.

Can I make this recipe with acan of pie filling?

I don’t recommend it. This isn’t an overly juicy cobbler as-is. Using an apple pie filling, peach pie filling or cherry pie filling, which are much thicker than canned peaches in syrup, will likely produce a dry cobbler. (Although, it might taste great, honestly, but would be more cake-like than cobbler.)

Can I make this recipe in a slow cooker?

Not sure, but I say go for it! I’d recommend layering it just as is written here, and cooking for 3 to 4 hours.

  1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F. Coat bottom of the pan of a 13- x 9-inch baking dish or casserole dish with nonstick cooking spray; add butter to dish. Place in oven for a couple of minutes to melt while oven preheats.
  2. Meanwhile, open cake mix box, and separate cake mix bag from cinnamon brown sugar mixture bag. Place cake mix in a large mixing bowl. Add half of cinnamon sugar mixture to bowl, and set aside remaining cinnamon sugar mixture. Add water to bowl, and whisk to combine. Remove baking dish from oven. Spoon batter over melted butter, but do not stir.
  3. Pour canned peaches with syrup evenly over batter in baking dish; do not stir. Sprinkle evenly with remaining cinnamon sugar mixture.
  4. Bake in preheated oven until crust is golden brown and fruit filling is hot and bubbly, about 1 hour. Remove from oven, and let cool 10 minutes. Top warm cobbler with a scoop of ice cream, if desired. Store leftovers in an airtight container.
