How to check time zone difference? ›

Calculating time zones is simple and involves adding or subtracting an hour for every 15 degrees of longitude.

You must start by finding the difference in longitude (or degrees) of the two places. You do this by adding the two numbers. Then, divide by the 15 degrees that occurs in one hour and this will give you the time difference between two locations through the International Date Line.

To convert time to a number of hours, multiply the time by 24, which is the number of hours in a day. To convert time to minutes, multiply the time by 1440, which is the number of minutes in a day (24*60). To convert time to seconds, multiply the time time by 86400, which is the number of seconds in a day (24*60*60 ).

Specifically, the zones are spaced 15 degrees apart, and each time zone differs from its adjacent time zone by one hour (earlier or later). That way, the times in each zone align with the local solar times of sunrise and sunset.

First, identify the starting and an ending time. The goal is to subtract the starting time from the ending time under the correct conditions. If the times are not already in 24-hour time, convert them to 24-hour time. AM hours are the same in both 12-hour and 24-hour time.

To calculate the duration of time, you can draw a line with the start time at one end and the end time at the other. If the start time is not directly on the hour, add up the minutes to the next greatest hour. Do the same with the end time but to the next smallest hour. Add up the hours in between.

To solve for time, divide the distance traveled by the rate. For example, if Cole drives his car 45 km per hour and travels a total of 225 km, then he traveled for 225/45 = 5 hours.

To convert 18:00 UTC (6:00 p.m.) into your local time, subtract 6 hours, to get 12 noon CST. During daylight saving (summer) time, you would only subtract 5 hours, so 18:00 UTC would convert to 1:00 p.m CDT. Note that the U.S. uses a 12-hour format with a.m. and p.m.
