The Peer Ministry Program here is amazing – it's like having a second family. We have had the opportunity to do so many service projects out in the community and the experience has been eye-opening. I know I will continue to look for opportunities like this when I get to college. The Director of College and School Counseling has been super helpful with college applications and keeping me on track. Also, being able to take college courses in small classes while in high school has been awesome too – I know I am prepared for the next step. Overall, St. Joseph High School has been a great experience for me.... There are multiple electives that students are able to take based on their interests, as well as an organized and thought-out plan for post-high school life, and counseling throughout your experience. The best parts of Staples would most likely be the diversity in classes and how much I was able to learn, varying from Middle East Studies to film and literature critique. These miniscule yet vital classes have helped grow my horizons and keep me curious. Despite this, I would like to see more diversity in the school, as well as an emphasis on different cultures and the importance of them. 10. #9 Best High Schools for Athletes in ConnecticutNewtown High SchoolNewtown School District, CT·9-12·Rating 3.88 out of 5 522 reviewsSenior: Newtown High School was a very comforting experience and I feel that the college preparation was a better than average one. After what the town has experienced and the unity that it exudes, the high school support system as well as the academic opportunities are both exceptional in my opinion. I took AP and Honors classes and even with some stressors at that level the support from the teachers and support staff was amazing. Although a larger town and high school it has created a unity that is like a giant hug anywhere you go in town. Every year on the anniversary of Sandy Hook the town unites at churches, the town green and even restaurants to show the love and support that continues to grow after a tragedy. I feel like the warmth and love that spills over into the educational system speaks volumes about the town. 12. #11 Best High Schools for Athletes in ConnecticutRidgefield High SchoolRidgefield School District, CT·9-12·Rating 3.7 out of 5 399 reviewsSenior: The majority of my Freshman year was spent during lockdown so I may have a skewed opinion, but overall, I had a really good experience here! If anyone's incoming, join theater (the clubs, the classes, the program, all of them)- I promise you will not regret it! I made so many friends through theater, and the costume, prop and stagecraft resources are all top-notch. The library is also amazing, and the school food swings back and forth between really really good and incredibly not good (order the noodles if they're available). In terms of classes, there are only a few teachers that I had negative experiences with, and even those taught me things. The administration needs to be better at responding to harassment-related issues, but they are effective a decent amount of the time - any time I went straight to my dean, stuff got done quickly. If you have an extra STEM credit you need, take Geoscience! I had so much fun in that class, and all of my friends will back me up!... 13. #12 Best High Schools for Athletes in ConnecticutGranby Memorial High SchoolGranby School District, CT·9-12·Rating 3.57 out of 5 141 reviewsSenior: As a high school senior, I have experienced most of the things that this school has to offer. As you move up in grades, the diverse courses that you can take are extremely beneficial in discovering what interests you, and what you may want to do in life. It helped me pick a medical career for my future! The teachers are very inviting and respectful to students, and most provide you with what you need to succeed. Our facilities are amazing, especially our turf fields that are amazing for athletes in various sports. I would argue that we have some of the best athletic facilities in the state. The only thing that should be improved upon at school is the food. Last year, the food was very good and there were a large variety of options. This year, if you are not in the first wave of lunches, good luck finding any other options of meal choice. I have explored all of these facets on a daily basis, whether it be on the ice for hockey, in class, or after school in the Jazz Band. I have grown out of my shell and become more social. I have continued to be intellectually competent. I have explored religion inside and outside of my classes. I am loving and try my best to do unto others I would wish to have done to me. If you want a safe environment, high academics, and the chance to go to any college if you apply yourself in the right ways, you can find that here. While it's not known for sending many athletes D1, it is a strong selection to thrive in high academics with a strong staff of teachers (though there is the occasional exception) in an environment of students that support one another in and out of the classroom while also founding charities, starting initiatives, and pursuing their passions. While I would recommend to the administration to allocate further resources into college counseling, academic-oriented clubs, and mental health resources - which were all notably underfunded this year - I am proud to have spent my four years of high school in Wilton with students that push themselves to be the best.... Many students who graduate from Farmington High School end up going to a top 25 college, which is also something that students and parents highly value. The culture of the school is certainly VERY competitive, in both academics and sports. If you are a naturally competitive student and/or athlete with thick skin, then Farmington High School is a school in which you will thrive and find much success. Something that I would like to see change, however, is Farmington High School's approach to students with mental illnesses, such as severe anxiety or depression.
